On the backs of those that serve their country
Arianna hits bottom and digs yesterday as she shows her utter contempt for the troops and advises Democrats to sell out our military for political gain as "drugged up, hallucinating, and stressed out" killers for whom Haditha is an everyday occurance.
She starts by extending allegations about Haditha to all the troops.
It means the killings in Haditha -- like Abu Ghraib, like Bagram, like Guantanamo, like all the everyday, unheralded horrors perpetrated on innocent Iraqi civilians -- have made America less safe.
After all, says Arianna, smearing our troops is the moral thing to do. She continues by expressing her approval of Murtha's use of the tactic:
This is the issue that nationalizes the 2006 races. It's the right stance strategically (as Jack Murtha has been saying for months). It's the right stance morally. And it's also the right stance politically.
This is disgustingly cold and calculating by anyone's standards. But hey, it's about regaining power, right? After all, painting them as "baby killers" worked before...
And to Arianna, this represents an opportunity to be exploited - nothing more.
If Democrats can make this their defining issue, they can stop worrying about the laundry list of "what ifs" they are now obsessing over: What if people forget about Katrina and Abramoff and DeLay? What if gas prices come down? What if GOP gerrymandering trumps voter unrest? What if the gay marriage ruse works again? What if, what if, what if...
They need to calm their nerves and keep it simple. It's about making us safe, stupid. And keeping our worn-out, stressed-out, missionless troops in Iraq is making us less -- much less -- safe.
This is not just sick - it exposes an icy vacuum where heart and soul should be. In Arianna's case, I think the last thin veil of "I support the troops" - if indeed it was ever visible - has forever fallen away.
Update: Welcome Blackfive readers!

Boy, Arianna sure made the transition from die-hard conservative to rabid liberal with ease, didn't she?
You know, I spent 31 years active duty in the U.S. Army defending the right of the Ariannas to spew their venom. If people like Arianna will just keep up their radical liberal rhetoric, then every year was worth the time. The populace cannot listen to (or read) the spewings of the Arianna types and without concluding that they are folks who do not love America and do not wish to she her defended at any cost. We refer to them as the "hate America first" crowd for good reason.
So, I say keep up the radical rhetoric, Arianna, because you are helping our cause far more than your own.

OK, dude. At the risk of losing the new-found spirit of bi-partisan debate we've got going on here. . .
There is a big difference between "Liberal" and "Reality that does not conform to Conservative wishes." That is always a difficult thing for Conservatives to get through. Similarly, there is a difference between "Not Supporting the Troops" and "Reality that does not conform to Conservative wishes." Hence, Liberals are branded "Traitors" by Ann Coulter and the like because nothing is conforming to the Conservative preference, and therefore if it's not one thing, it must necessarily all be "The Other."
Case in point: Jack Murtha. Now, if you believe him to be a liberal or one generally associated with Progressive or Liberal causes, you haven't been paying attention. In fact, those of us who have been paying attention and are Liberals have usually been frustrated by Conservatives throwing Jack Murtha in our faces because he is a Democrat who almost always disagrees with Democratic platforms. Still, this same bulwark of rational thought who so fit the Conservative agenda so long as he disagreed with Liberals is now himself branded as Liberal and a nut case.
You might not like it, and it might not sit well with your world view, but the fact of the matter is that the situation in Iraq is getting out of hand. It's not just Iraqis and it's not just the Adminsitration anymore. The evils of war are starting to infect the troops, as they have in every other war. That's what's happening.
It is the right stance morally to oppose this war. Don't hand me any "Support the Troops" garbage, here. Do you still think it was moral to support the war before it happened? Because if there is a shadow of doubt, then you need to understand that every day you support this war out of love for the troops, you are leaving the troops to fester where they never belonged in the first place.
Frankly, my opinion is that it is time those responsible for this war started paying the price for it. The ultimate price for any politician is his seat, so yeah. It's about tactics, it's about strategy, it's about shifting the conversation, and it's about winning.

“the situation in Iraq is getting out of hand.”
I’ve been hearing that for three years but not once has anyone ever been able to give examples of how. How is it getting out of hand in Iraq? Give me some examples? Is it the hospitals and schools that are now open and running? Is it the new government?
“you are leaving the troops to fester where they never belonged in the first place.”
That is based on opinion and not fact. Isn’t it possible to support the troops because some know what its like to be overseas in a war and listening to people like Jane Fonda spew her hatred. Know that some power hungry politician is preaching pull out and re-deployment, not out of concern or because they actually give a sh*T about the troops but to cater to a certain portion of the population and gain news coverage?
“It is the right stance morally to oppose this war.”
You have the right to believe this just like I have the right not to. You may believe that “the evils of war” are infecting the troops but I don’t. I believe that all people have good and bad in them and it doesn’t just come out in war, it’s a choice made every day by every person in it. Look at the newspapers around the world and it is present in every one of them. What do you really know about the evils of war? Have you been in one?
